Learn if Laser Vision Correction Is Right for You

Laser eye surgery is a great way to correct your vision and potentially free you from wearing glasses and contacts. While it’s an option for many people, laser eye surgery isn’t always suitable for everyone.

During an exam and consultation, we’ll assess whether your age, health, refractive error, and other considerations make you an ideal candidate for LASIK or PresbyVision.

Who Can Get Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser vision correction, also known as refractive surgery, uses a laser to reshape the cornea and improve vision.

Those who are good candidates for LASIK, which is one type of laser eye surgery, include:

  • Adults at least 18+, because the eye stops growing around this age
  • People with a stable prescription
  • People who are moderately nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism
  • People with healthy eyes
  • People who aren’t currently pregnant or breastfeeding

Over 40? Consider PresbyVision

If you’re over 40 and you’re noticing changes to your near vision or have already started using reading glasses, you may have presbyopia. This is a natural change to your eyes’ lenses that affects your vision at reading distance. You might notice it while working on the computer, reading a menu, or using your smartphone.

For patients with presbyopia, we may recommend PresbyVision vision correction surgery. There are 2 different procedures:

  • Lens PresbyVision replaces the eye’s natural lens with a trifocal artificial one to allow good vision at all distances.
  • Laser PresbyVision corrects your dominant eye to see far distances and your other eye to see near vision.

The best choice for you may come down to whether you’re OK with still wearing glasses for close-up vision. We’ll discuss all your questions during your exam and consultation.

What to Expect During Your Consultation

Your laser eye surgery consultation includes a thorough eye exam where we test your vision and check the health of your eyes.

Since results can vary, we’ll discuss what you can expect from surgery, including possible short and long-term side effects of surgery and what recovery will look like. Overall, our goal is to answer all your questions about laser vision correction so you can feel confident about your next steps.
